Day trip on the river to see the famous Canon Del Suemidero.
This is where Chiapas got the name from. The story goes that a family committed suicide by jumping into this canyon as they were being invaded. So rather than surrender to the invaders the whole family jumped to their death, so the city is named after the family and this canyon is the city's seal/crest. Very cool!
Here are pics...oh yeah lets of crocodiles here too...
beach full of black vultures...kinda creepy!
there are alot of cool rock formations along the river...all natural. Here is a FACE in the mountain.
this is the ICONIC image of the canyon...this is the view as you go into the canyon and is the symbol of the city.
we went inside this cave where the Virgin Guadelupe has an alter...very cool.
from the outside cruising in...
this is the famous "XMAS TREE" formation, during the rainy season it is a waterfall and it looks more like a lit xmas tree. If you also look at the top, you can see a "mayan face" too. It looks like the mask from the SAW movies to me...but it is definitely face-like.
a shot of the memorial at their dam. This dam powers over half the state of Chiapas and they have enough to sell it to other cities and such. It creates a lot power...and the 3 men here are the architect that designed it and 2 workers.
Next stop PALENQUE and the Pyramids!!!
