The following story is based on actual events.

The names have been changed to protect the guilty.

Proceed with caution.

It started as a pretty typical laid back Saturday night. I went to the xfit class in the morning, had a great workout, went with my friend to the pool, had a great lunch and got home to chill.  I was texting with my friend Alice about possibly getting together along with Chester for a fun donut run to Krispy Kreme in Burbank. It was an on going joke and we were going to try and do it.  In between all of this I was chatting with Kathy and she mentioned her and her friends were going to be partying in DTLA and may be hanging out at a  local bar called The York.  The York was a spot that was thrown in our planning too, as a place to possibly go.  Well...this may be a good night!

I met up with Alice and we headed out to grab a bite to eat.  After dinner Chester called and we met up with him.  We had to drop off Alice's car and then the 3 of us headed to The York.  We walk up to the door...around 11or so. I am actually not really sure what time is.  This was a sign we were going to have a fun time.  One of the roided out doormen that checked our IDs was swiggin on a Muscle Milk. HAHAHA...I mean let's be more cliche right?  This dude is standing outside a bar on a Sat night drinking a Muscle Milk.  Get out of here...idiot.  FUNNY!

The night started out a little slow...just hanging at the bar, drinking a little...people watching.  I received a text from Kathy that her and her friend were coming down.  Sweet.  The odds are getting better...2 guys and 1 girl is no bueno.  As we were were hanging...BOOM.  Mary comes walking up with her friend Maggie!  Oh wow...what are you doing here? TOTALLY RANDOM!  So now we are having some fun.  Mary lets us know she is waiting for a text from her friend that she needs to pick up...Laura.  So now we are doing quite well.  Then who walks in?  Cathy and her friend Denise!'s recap thus far.

*Kathy had like one guy with her but I forgot his we have a pretty good little crew growing.

Mary and I chatted about if we heard from ANOTHER mutual friend, Eric..and IceMan.    So I texted Eric and IceMan...they were leaving a spot in Hollywood and would meet us.  BOOM...the crew grows yet again.

Mary and Maggie leave to go pick up Laura and bring her back.  OK....another roll call....

Let's just say...the evening was getting good.  With EVERYONE there...we just chatted, some dancing, drinking and other activities.  Here are some bullets:

  • Chester grinding his pelvic region on various girls
  • Lots of drinking/ordering water
  • Gaining access to an off limits area behind the bathrooms and leaving because of the stench
  • Various lap dances and rib tickling
  • Boob flicking
  • Everyone getting parking tickets
  • Shit talking by all
  • Fun by all is now almost 2AM.  Bar is closed...where shall we go?  DONUTS!!!!  Chester SWEARS the Burbank Krispy Kreme is 24 hours. He KNOWS this...I seem to recall they close at 10. I get outvoted and we gather the troops.  LETS GO!!!!  Krispy Kreme donuts are on the brain. We walk out to the lot and yes everyone has parking tickets. FAIL.

We pile in two cars and off to Burbank we go. I of course drive Chester's car and inside I have Chester and Alice in the backseat.  I am pretty much Driving Miss Daisy/Taxi/Bang Bus. Cathy and Denise are in their own car but we lost them on the way through Eagle Rock.We cruise through HLP and over the hill to Eagle Rock on the way to the 5 north.  We are passing the Plaza and I get a call from the Eric in the second car that maybe we should go somewhere else? We were passing Yum Yum we stop in that lot.  We have a quick convo.

Are we going?  Not going? A little drama ensues...back and forth...bare in mind it is around 2 or 215AM. We are discuss our options.  Some people suggest heading home and calling it a night. More back and forth...and we agree let's just go to Krispy Kreme.  Back in the cars...but we now have Eric in our car.  So off we go.

Hit the 5 north...and we see it.  FOUR LANES closed.  FOUR.  It is backing up and fast...we are trying to exit Burbank Blvd...and it is nothing but red brake lights.  Chester and Alice both have to PEE SO BAD they are going to hurt their urethras...per Chester's medical analysis.  The exit is blocked...all four lanes. BLOCKED!

Chester is SCREAMING for me to put the car in park and he will drive the car INTO the exit and get us off this freeway. I am screaming back NO...we are screaming screaming and screaming.  I fall under the peer pressure...and PULL INTO THE BLOCKED OFF FOUR LANES and attempt to exit.  We drive and of course the exit is BLOCKED..ROAD CLOSED.  I have to swerve back into the ONE lane of we are is moving like 10 ft every 10 mins.  This is a bad situation for the PEE PEOPLE in the back seat.  We move along..inching away..inching away...not moving.

FINALLY CHESTER and ERIC HAD ENOUGH....they got out of the car...and jumped the freeway.  Let me repeat...2 guys...jumped out of the car...on a northbound freeway, jumped the divider crossed the south bound lanes into the shrubs and over the fence to Krispy Kreme...which we could clearly see from the car.  Yes...that is what happened.  Of course both sides of the freeway are pretty much shut down. So the south bound lanes are empty. is around 2:30AM.  Now it is me and poor Alice in the car...she is going to die if she does not pee. We are slowly inching our way. We get close and close and see it.  The southbound lanes are all closed because of a pretty bad accident. They are letting one or two cars through one at a time.  Alice is screaming at this point.  She needs to PEE bad....

Cell phone is blowing up...guess what. KK is CLOSED.  YUP.  NO DONUTS.  KK IS CLOSED.  Sooooo...we tell them to wait.  Kathy is trying to get to KK and meet back with us.  Mary and her car is god knows where....we lost them since before the guys jumped out of the car.  Alice and I are inching along and we see it. The lanes open  up and we SCOOOOOT over and get off the freeway.  We pull into a 24 hr Jack in the Box and Alice gets to pee...FINALLY.  We get back in the car...and head back to KK to regroup.

We pull up on Victory Pl and Empire and there standing on the street is Chester, Eric, Iceman and I see Mary's car and her crew all parked and looking for a place to pee.  It was comedy.  So we is now around 300AM.  Mary's car wants to go home.  Iceman had to get home and was a tad frustrating with the whole KK run being a bust.  Everyone's buzz has worn off at this Chester screams...WE ARE GETTING DONUTS!  So we pile back in...and the 4 of us.  Me, Chester, Alice and Eric go to get donuts.

We got our donuts.

We ended up in La Crescenta at a place called Foster's Family Donuts. 24 hours.

We got back into the car and headed was around 330AM.  We dropped off Alice...I got to my car..and Chester took Eric home.  What a night.....

We have some plans that were discussed like a Bday celebration..and a Karaoke outing.  I hope we get to do was a great night with some great people.  FUN as all get out!

FGB - Hell

I did it...almost did NOT but I did it.

Here is a refresher on what FIGHT GONE BAD is...since I know you all are too lazy to go back to my previous post.  This is a crossfit set that was made for MMA fighter BJ Penn.  The story goes that he wanted a exercise set that would mimic a pro MMA fight. Help him train strength, dynamic movement, speed, endurance etc.  So after he did the exercise, they asked what did you think? His reply was...that was like a FIGHT GONE BAD.  Thus this workout is known as FIGHT GONE BAD.

from the crossfit FAQ:

In this workout you move from each of five stations after a minute. This is a five-minute round from which a one-minute break is allowed before repeating. We've used this in 3 and 5 round versions. The stations are:
  1. Wall-ball: 20 pound ball, 10 ft target. (Reps)
  2. Sumo deadlift high-pull: 75 pounds (Reps)
  3. Box Jump: 20" box (Reps)
  4. Push-press: 75 pounds (Reps)
  5. Row: calories (Calories)
The clock does not reset or stop between exercises. On call of "rotate," the athlete/s must move to next station immediately for good score. One point is given for each rep, except on the rower where each calorie is one point.

There is this event in mid Sep that I wanted to I need to start training for it.  It is called FGB6 and it is all for charity and a bunch of bad ass crossfit gyms do it and it is a huge crossfit lovefest.  So here is my score....

I wanted to break 200...but I could not.

I was going to DIE...I literally almost died. I could not get enough air in my chest, I could not breath. I was ready to give up.  But my friend and coach for this endeavor would not let me. I just kept going.  I did not think I could...but now I know what my capabilities are and I have a solid plan on what is next.  I need to train much harder on wall balls and box jumps.  2 things I pretty much already knew what I needed to do.

All I have to say..that was the HARDEST 17 minutes of y my life.  It defined brutal...and my body has never felt that way before.  It was crazy.

I am hoping to up my score to at least 200.  Let's see what happens.

OTAFUKU...the truth!

As some of you may have seen below in a previous post, I picked up an issue of LUCKY PEACH.  David Chang's new food quarterly magazine.  I grabbed issue 1, which sold out of its first 2 runs....and then subscribed for issues 2-5.  I just started reading it and  the first article, if you want to call it about Peter Meehan, David's co-writer and David going to Japan for a ramen run. all the bad ass ramen as they can.  so I am reading all about the traditions and how we have NO CLUE what ramen is...and how high it is in Japanese culture. Masters or the stuff...that do that and only that for their whole life. It is a way of life...literally.  He writes about the style where the noodles and soup or sauce are totally separated...kind of like a soup noodle deconstructed....

I went here for lunch Torrance, CA.

Definitely one of the more authentic Japanese noodle places I have ever seen...and been. EVER.

The place is open for lunch then closed until dinner most noodle places in Japan and fancy places in the US.

Of course I had the house special soba...all fresh and made in house on the premises....

my friend ordered the raw egg...completely forgetting we were eating COLD SOBA...not HOT. You cannot pur your egg in the hot broth to poach it. FAIL. LOL.

Look at those perfect noodles. WOW. This was the regular size...their is a large size too. I need to get the large size next time.

I ordered the house special soba with the mini bowl combo...

the mini tempura bowl was good...

another shot of the noodles...

so the correct way to eat this is to take some noodles and dunk it in the soy sauce dressing and eat it that way. Then they bring you a container of the noodle water. The starchy, milky, noodle water you can add to your left over sauce. I KNOW this from reading LUCKY PEACH! So amazing!

The noodle water...

pouring it into my dipping sauce to make a soup!

so yummy...David Chang said it best. Deconstructing a noodle its purest form.

noodle remains...

so here is the best to be "elitist" without it? Or do it by not doing anything. Check out the FRONT of the restaurant...

literally NOTHING outside. ZERO SIGNAGE.

you would literally miss this place...always...they seem to NOT want to be found!

Nothing...except for this...

IMG_9486 about secret and hole in the wall....amazing. They dont care if you come or not. They are happy with the people that know of it..and dont care! How elitist right? LOL.

Hipster Dogs

Today my friend and I were driving to grab some lunch and we stopped at a corner and waited as these 2 guys crossed the street. I am assuming they were friends or "partners" as one was walkng in front and the one behind was filming or taking pics with his iPhone. They were both walking these little dogs along side them.

My buddy made a snarky comment like...more douches with their hipster dogs. It HIT are DANG RIGHT! Let's see...any self respecting hipster has these items:

Apple earbuds permanently dangling around the neck
Straw fedora hat
skinny jeans, sometime with the right leg rolled up...why? because...
a Fixie bike
throw in a handlebar mustache or some facial hair and some tattoos and you got yourself a dbag hipster.

but what is the new trend? Or maybe a trend that has been bubbling for some time....the hipster dog! yes!

Maybe you have seen one of these at your local organic coffee place?

maybe one of these?

or one of these?

or if you are extra get one of these...

you can walk your dog...ride your bike and wear these....

ugh...shoot me please.

World Class Fitness in 100 Words

Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast. Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.

Sang Kogi Nara - Los Angeles

Tonight we celebrated Barry's bday which was on 8/8 with some good ol fashioned AYCE KBBQ. The guests were me, Chuck, Dom and Rob. Dom took us to his little "secret" spot. Definitely away from the hubub of K Town proper but still good ass meat and decent service.

Sang Kogi Nara

It was pretty good. We had the $19.99 per person that came with a couple plates of Sashimi too. I of course did not partake in the raw fish but everything else was good.

not alot of the Bahn Cha as other places but who cares when all you want is MEAT!

Brisket is always a good start....

more please...and yes that is STEAK....

Since I am on a diet and rice..just salad!

Short ribs and marinated ribs...and the soup in the middle? That was was like a K style spicy miso soup. Delicious!

nice and meaty....

we ended the night shooting some pool and hanging out some more. Good times for sure. Now I have to sleep since I have GYM in the morning!!!

Today was a good day at lunch!  Luckily I work about .5 mile away from the latest LA foodie place...Michael Voltaggio's INK.SACK.  Pretty cool.  His main restaurant INK is not open yet but he opened up a sandwich shop on the same street.  A couple co workers and I jumped in the car and went to try this place. I of course had to bring my camera to capture the "experience."
