Epic Internet FAIL

Why this dude FAILS

1 - He is filming himself using a crappy slim pocket camera
2 - He is inside his bathroom
3 - The shoes he has are duh...FAKES
4 - He is ALONE in the bathroom as he says "you let me get these from my man" like he has someone in there with him.

The only thing he gets Those Shoes Don't Exist...he is absolutely right about that...

Today, my family and I headed to Hacienda Heights, CA to visit this Buddhist Temple. We went to eat the vegetarian lunch and to light some incense.

The grounds are very beautiful and there are these little cute statues all over...

This was my lunch. No meat...all vegetarian.

It was a cool little visit. Once you are there, it seems like you are not in LA anymore. I felt like I was visiting China again. It was very peaceful and beautiful.

My Grandfather's Watch

My grandfather on my mom's side passed away when I was pretty young. I remember going to the funeral way back when and feeling really confused about the whole thing. Fast forward to this week, my little brother is graduating from HS and both my aunts are in town. My one aunt brought me this.....

This is my grandfather's watch. I had to ask my grandmother for it, as it was sitting in her safe deposit box since his death. My uncle, is not into watches and was not interested at all. So I took up the courage to ask my grandmother.

as you can see it is a 1960s era OMEGA SEAMASTER DATE. My mom remembers her dad buying this around 1965 or so. It was his FIRST NICE WATCH that he saved up and bought himself. He barely wore it as he worked a manual job and did not want to damage it.

I cannot wait to begin restoring it. I have my "watch guru" helping me along this journey. We are going to get it fully serviced so it is running perfectly inside. I will need a new bracelet as it does not fit me. My grandfather had small wrist I guess. I will keep it all "period correct."

I will post up final pics once the watch is all done. But you can see that is looks pretty damn good for now...and wont need too much work at all. I am very proud and excited to have this watch...a small piece of my family's history. I love it...and wanted to share.

Mei Long Village - long overdue

Yes, I am guilty of not posting about this place A LONG TIME AGO. I have been coming here for probably a good 2-3 years and I have several friends that LOVE this place as well as some converts that I have brought over once or twice. This is it...MEI LONG VILLAGE, one of the best soup dumplings or SIU LONG BAOs in the SGV. That is saying alot...I know. In my humble opinion this place KILLS....Din Tai Fung. Now...DTF is good...but sooooo expensive and not as flavorful as this place. DTF is still a pretty damn good dumpling but...price for quality etc you cannot beat this place.

Here is a dish my family is meatballs. It is called SZE GEE TAO, literally meaning Lion's Head. I have had it at better places, so it is not one of my faves.

Another staple...SHANGHAI RICE CAKE...loving this stuff.

Here is one of the cooler things in the menu that I love to "surpise" people with. This is the FISH FILET W SEAWEED. WOW...this stuff is good. It is a lightly fried fish stick I guess with seaweed infused in the batter. It is crispy, salty and light...damn good!

and then we come to the main reason why you come here. The SIU LONG BAO. As you can see I was late to snap the pic and there were these 2 lonely ones left. I quickly shot this before they disappeared. Again, if you are in the mood for these cannot go wrong at this place. On Valley, a couple blocks east of New ave in a mini mall with Beard Papa cream puffs and 4 foot massage places.

John Cusack in one of my favorite movies of the early 2000s. Jack Black was in this film along with Lisa Bonet and Sara Gilbert from Roseanne...what a cool flick. Well, being a fan...I always wanted a t shirt just like John Cusack's from the movie!!!

Well, your boy got one....straight from Chicago. My aunt brought me my own DECIBEL AUDIO t shirt all the way from Chicago...from the original store. SWEEEEEET! Now I can look cool as I age myself from this movie!

In South Africa, Chinese is the New Black

Posted By Sky Canaves On June 19, 2008 @ 7:59 am In Migration, Africa | Comments Disabled

A high court in South Africa [1] ruled on Wednesday that Chinese-South Africans will be reclassified as “black,” a term that includes black Africans, Indians and others who were subject to discrimination under apartheid. As a result of this ruling, ethnically Chinese citizens will be able to benefit from government affirmative action policies aimed at undoing the effects of apartheid.

In 2006, the Chinese Association of South Africa sued the government, claiming that its members were being discriminated against because they were being treated as whites and thus failed to qualify for business contracts and job promotions reserved for victims of apartheid. The association successfully argued that, since Chinese-South Africans had been treated unequally under apartheid, they should be reclassified in order to redress wrongs of the past.
Jacob Zuma, President of the African National Congress, with Hu Jintao in Beijing last week (Reuters)

This is not the first time the classification of Chinese in South Africa has changed. In fact, the racial status of Chinese-South Africans has often shifted with the nation’s political climate and its international relations.

The first significant group of Chinese came to South Africa in the early 20th century, before a formal system of apartheid existed, to work in the gold mines. They were not encouraged to settle permanently and by 1910 almost all the mine workers had been [2] repatriated. Those who remained struggled with racism and lived in separate communities based on language, culture and socio-economic status.

As apartheid became enshrined in law with the ascendancy of the Afrikaner government in the late 1940s, the Chinese were classified as “colored,” forced to live apart from whites, and were denied educational and business opportunities along with the right to vote. But after South Africa established an economic alliance with Taiwan in the 1970s, Taiwanese immigrants were welcomed as “honorary whites,” and other Chinese in South Africa began to be treated more like whites. Although they never attained the formal “honorary white” status of Taiwanese, Koreans and Japanese in South Africa and couldn’t vote, Chinese-South Africans were no longer required to use segregated facilities, and in the early 1980s they were exempted from some of the discriminatory laws that applied to other non-whites.

After apartheid ended in the early 1990s, the legal status of Chinese has remained in a gray area, though they’ve generally been lumped together with whites and denied the post-apartheid benefits available to other non-white groups.

South Africa has seen waves of immigrants and investment from China since 1994, and today there are as many as 300,000 Chinese living in the South Africa. But the new court decision is unlikely to benefit most of them or trigger another mass migration– it applies only to those Chinese who were South African citizens before 1994 (and their descendants), a much smaller number of around 10,000 to 12,000.

Vietnam House

Today, Friday the 13th, I celebrated my friend June's bday with a little Vietnamese food. It was just 5 of us so we picked a neighborhood fave in San Gabriel. VIETNAM HOUSE....this place is pretty dang good. They also own a spot across the street called GOLDEN DELI. Go ahead and yelp it or citysearch it. This place gets packed like crazy.
For appetizers, we ordered the Crepe. It had shrimp, bean sprouts, onions and some curry flavor. It was kind of like a big egg foo young. Just OK.
We then ordered some standard Vietnamese spring rolls. Average...pretty good not bad at all.
These are some of the best around...kinda a "must have' when you come here. Fried Egg wrap these up with the lettuce and dip in the secret sauce and you are in heaven!
This was my dinner, I ordered the #76 on the menu. For those that don't know, all Vietnamese restaurants number their menus. So you can pretty much order by number. This is the charbroiled beef, egg loaf, shredded pork over rice. Damn good.

After dinner we walked across to PHOENIX DESSERTS for the standard dessert. I did not photo it as I have already posted about Phoenix and what I get.

A nice simple evening...Happy Birthday JuneChan!

Mexican Food and Grad Night 2008

ahhh...high school. What a time. Well, today my family and I went to Franklin High School's Senior Awards Presentation. My little brother got a few awards as well as recognition for his scholarships. It was an over three hour ordeal...tough. Afterwards, he needed to be back to school for grad night at Disneyland. Wow...grad night...dang, I remember going to mine. I ask Nowa to go with me! She was kind enough to times. She eventually married my friend Henry and now is a mother of two. We are still the best of friends. Oh well...moving on to dinner. We had to eat quick so we ate somewhere local. El Arco Iris.

We like this place as it is pretty good. Not super great...but decent and flavorful. It has gotten progressively more expensive as time has gone by.
This is the 2 taco combo. A chicken hardshell taco with a carnitas soft taco with rice and beans.
This is my usual...the "Armando's Special" which is ribeye steak (which I kinda doubt, I think it is just flank steak.) cooked and simmered in a spicy red sauce with onions. I never really eat beans so I get double rice! Yeah yeah..being Chinese helps when I am asking for more rice! This is definitely one of the better dishes here.

Ramen and Lakers Lose game 2

What a Sunday evening here in the city of angels. Sadly, tonight our LAKERS lost their second game in Boston against the Celtics. It was at least excited at the end. Kobe and the boys came back from a 20 pt deficit to make it a 2 point game. They could not finish it and ultimately lost. Boohoo...

Tonight, Mom and I went to have ramen. Since it was just the 2 of us I decided to take her to a nice "regular" ramen place that is close to home. Now this place is no SHIN SEN GUMI...and actually I like FU FU TAI much this place is actually third on my list.

This is TAMAYA RAMEN, there are a few locations, scattered around LA and this is a fairly new one located on Las Tunas in Alhambra. It is pretty good, not bad but not super excellent. Just good decent ramen. Whenever I come I always make a combo...pick a ramen and then choose another side dish to make your combo:

This is mom's. She ordered the CHANPON RAMEN which is a seafood ramen with a Tonkotsu base and a beef teriyaki bowl for her combo. She obviously did not finish and had to bring the teriyaki home.

Here is my usual. I pretty much always get the Tonkotsu Ramen with a katsu don. Now thanks to google I learned something. There is a difference when ordering:

to my Japanese friends, please excuse my ignorance. I just learned this today! So if you order a TONKATSU ramen, they actually put a piece of breaded pork (Tonkatsu) IN THE RAMEN. But of you get the TONKOTSU ramen, you get the kick ass white creamy broth with a slice of roasted pork and half an egg. DuH! So now I know the difference.

Here is a detail of my TONKOTSU Ramen...oh man it was deeelish. Even looking at these pics makes my mouth water. The broth is soooo rish and great. it.
Here is a detail of my pork katsu don. Mmm mmm...I love me a don. The shoyu and egg and rice and meat! Man....yeah its pretty much a heavenly meal. Wash it down with some iced green tea or maybe a Mango flavored Calpico drink and it done for me.
